About
In 1904 the first candlestick telephone was patented by Western Electric, the manufacturing arm of American Telephone & Telegraph until 1995. It consisted of a tube shaft that supported a microphone or transmitter (mouthpiece). Its base sometimes incorporated a rotary dial. The speaker or receiver (earpiece) is a separate unit, often conical in shape and big enough to cover the ear, with a cable connecting it to the telephone. It was held to the ear as the user spoke into the microphone.
Perhaps it would be safe to assume that the engineers and designers at Western Electric never dreamed that about a hundred years later, their earpiece would be modified to the point that it is now shrunk to a size that can be inserted into the ear canal, sound reproduction has vastly improved, and the cable connecting it to the phone has vanished. Also, the earpiece has long ago expanded beyond the field of communication into entertainment.
Today earpieces are either headphones or earphones. The former are larger and still cover the ear but they are a far cry from Western Electric’s invention in terms of sound and design. Earphones are the small kinds that are inserted into the ear. There are ear buds which rest outside the ear canal, and canal earphones (in-ear monitors or IEMs) which are inserted into the ear canal.
With Bluetooth earphones the pesky wires dangling from ear pieces are eliminated. The creation of personal area networks or PANs now allow music lovers to enjoy their iPods or Zunes in private while working, walking, or running without fear of getting tangled up in the wires. Those who need to talk on the phone but can’t be bothered with holding it or perhaps clamping it between their ear and shoulder would appreciate the wireless earphones.
There are actually plenty of brands, models, and styles of Bluetooth earphones available in the market. This website seeks to explore and examine the features and designs of these brands and models. If you are in the market for these miniature wonders, you can begin your search with us.
